PICC, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy

PICC, Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy in India

Peripherally inserted central catheter insertion (PICC), bone marrow aspiration and biopsy

A PICC is a thin, flexible tube that is inserted into a vein in the upper arm and guided into a large vein above the right side of the heart called the superior vena cava. It is used to give intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, chemotherapy, and other drugs. Bone marrow aspiration is the removal of a small amount of this tissue in liquid form for examination.

Why choose Manipal Hospital

All types of biopsies and transfusions are performed by our highly qualified oncology and transplant surgeons with finesse. No wonder our comprehensive cancer care centre is among the best in its class and a one stop facility for cancer patients of all ages.

Solutions for bone marrow aspiration

A bone marrow aspiration removes only the marrow. This type of test is done to find the reason for many blood disorders and may be used to find out if cancer or infection has spread to the bone marrow. Bone marrow aspiration removes a small amount of bone marrow fluid and cells through a needle put into a bone.

Complexities of bone marrow aspiration

Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy are usually done together. Some of the risks include tenderness or pain, bleeding or bruising at the biopsy site, and redness or swelling.

Number of cases

Bone marrow aspiration and biopsies are routinely performed as diagnostic tests to determine the scope of the malignancy of the cancer and its spread. We have accomplished over a lakh cases already.

Success of bone marrow aspiration

These procedures are done in a clinic or hospital and usually take 20–30 minutes. Most patients can go home after they are done. The results of these tests are highly successful in diagnosing underlying bone marrow diseases.
