Overview:
This test is generally performed for detecting small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and also lactose/glucose malabsorption.
Pre Procedure:
The patient is advised to avoid taking fibre supplements 24 hours before the procedure.
The patient must not take antacids and antibiotics 4 weeks before the test.
No anti-mobility motility drugs and prokinetics must be taken 1 week before the examination.
As the procedure is conducted on an empty stomach, the patient is advised to be on 12 hours or overnight fasting.
The patient must inform the doctor if they are diabetic.
During Procedure:
This is a non-invasive and painless procedure that generally takes around 2 hours.
The patient will be moved to an area where their privacy will be respected throughout the procedure and they will be given a hospital gown for changing into.
The patient will be in a sitting position during the procedure.
Glucose water will be given to the patient before the procedure. The amount of glucose will be less if the patient is diabetic.
A small piece of equipment called Gastrolyser is used for performing the test.
The Gastrolyser will be attached to a disposable tube and the patient will be asked to breathe into it every 2 hours or 15 minutes.
Post Procedure:
Reports will be shared with the patient an hour after the completion of the procedure.
