The mitral valve is a valve containing two flaps in the heart, and it lies between the left ventricle and the left atrium. In some instances, the valves don’t open or close completely, which disrupts the flow of blood through the heart to the body and also causes the leakage of blood backwards into the left atrium. Moreover, the valve may narrow in some cases. Balloon mitral valvuloplasty is a procedure that is performed for widening the mitral valve to enable the easier flow of blood through the heart.
Why Manipal?
At Manipal Hospitals, we offer an environment of kindness and empathy and ensure that every patient who steps inside the hospital receives personalized diagnosis and treatment. Our multidisciplinary and experienced team of interventional specialists, surgeons, and cardiologists strives to offer clinical excellence and ensures that even the most demanding cardiac surgeries are conducted with ease and without any complications. Our cardiac centre provides a diverse range of cardiac services, including interventional procedures for clearing blockages in the heart.
Solutions
The balloon mitral valvotomy is the preferred procedure for mitral valve stenosis. This procedure is generally recommended if the patient has moderate to severe stenosis and if most of the mitral valve is in normal shape. It involves the insertion of a catheter into the artery in the arm or the groin. When this tube reaches the narrowed mitral valve, a balloon device, which is located on the tip of the catheter, is inflated. As the balloon presses against them, the fused or narrowed mitral valve leaflets get separated and stretched open, which increases the mitral valve opening’s size and enables the flow of more blood to the left ventricle from the left atrium.
Risks
Mitral valve regurgitation, in which the valve might get damaged prevents its closing and allows the leakage of blood backward into the heart, and restenosis, in which the valve can again become narrow after 10-20 years, which may feel the need for valve replacement surgery.
Success of BMV
Out of every 100 patients who are treated with a balloon valvotomy, 95 have reported successful outcomes and an immediate relief from persistent symptoms. While the balloon valvotomy procedure doesn’t make the valve normal or cure the health condition, it assists the valve is functioning normally, which ensures that blood flows normally through the heart.
Infection Control Protocol
At Manipal Hospitals, all patients get the same privileges and care irrespective of whether it is an open heart surgery or a minimally invasive procedure. We prioritize infection control at all times in a bid to stay committed to our goal of clinical excellence.
