Overview:
Oesophago-gastro Duodenoscopy or OGD involves the visual examination of the lining of the oesophagus, duodenum, and stomach.
Pre-Procedure:
The patient must be on an empty stomach with 6-8 hours or overnight fasting. No meals should be taken after midnight, not even water.
The patient must inform the doctor about underlying medical conditions and if they take blood thinners.
During Procedure:
The patient will be settled comfortably in an area where their privacy will be respected throughout the procedure. A hospital gown will be given for changing into.
The patient will have to remove their contact lenses, dentures, and eyeglasses.
Local anaesthesia will be sprayed on the throat to make it numb. A sedative may also be injected.
The patient will be given a mouth guard to protect their teeth.
The endoscope will be passed through the throat and the mouth while the patient will be asked to try to not swallow the endoscope.
The endoscope will neither interfere with the breathing nor cause any pain. The time duration of the procedure is around 5 minutes.
During the procedure, the doctor can take small tissue samples (biopsies) painlessly for pathologic examination.
Post Procedure:
The throat may feel slightly sore and numb.
The patient is advised to take a rest for one full day.
The patient must not attempt to drink or eat until the swallowing reflex of the body becomes normal.
The patient can start consuming their regular meals unless told otherwise.
The patient may feel slightly bloated because of the air that has been introduced via the endoscope.
In cases where a sedative was injected during the procedure, the patient is advised to not drive a car, make important decisions, and operate machines as the sedation significantly impairs reflexes and judgement.
Upper GI endoscopy is usually a safe procedure. However, in some rare cases, complications, such as the tear of the intestine, bleeding, or cardio-respiratory problems may occur. The patient is advised to contact the Gastroenterologist in India immediately in such cases.
