Balloon Pulmonary Valvotomy

Balloon Pulmonary Valvotomy Procedure in India

The two lower chambers of the heart are called ventricles and the right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs. This ventricle connects to the pulmonary artery, which is the main blood vessel going to the lungs. The pulmonary valve, which is one of the four valves of the heart, lies between the pulmonary artery and the right ventricle. In a healthy heart, the pulmonary valve fully opens when the right ventricle squeezes and enables the blood to flow to the pulmonary artery from the right ventricle. However, some people may have a fused or an abnormally thickened valve from birth. This valve may have an abnormal number of small parts called leaflets, owing to which, it cannot open up completely as it would have in normal situations. Moreover, with the growing pressure in the right ventricle, the heart has to work harder to pump the blood to the lungs, which, if left untreated, can damage the heart muscles and cause fatigue and breathlessness.

Why Manipal?

With years of experience, our multidisciplinary and expertly trained team of surgeons, cardiologists, and interventional specialists performs even some of the most demanding cardiac interventions and surgeries, such as the balloon pulmonary valvotomy, with ease. With the help of a state-of-the-art Cath Lab, our cardiac centre offers a diverse range of cardiac services, thus providing a holistic experience to the patients.

Solutions

At Manipal Hospitals, our celebrated team of interventional cardiologists performs balloon pulmonary valvotomy to fix the pulmonary valve and strives to provide the best outcomes. During the procedure, a thin, long tube called the catheter is inserted with an inflatable balloon at its tip via a blood vessel in the patient’s groin. The catheter is guided towards the pulmonary valve where the surgeon inflates the balloon to open it in order to allow free passage of blood to the lungs.

Complexities

Bleeding, blood clots leading to stroke, pulmonary artery rupture, infection, partial closure of the valve over a period of time, fluid build-up around the heart, and abnormal heart rhythms are some of the risks associated with balloon pulmonary valvotomy.

Infection Control Protocol

Manipal Hospitals is one of the best cardiac surgery hospitals in India where we prioritize patient safety and comfort at all times. Post the completion of the balloon pulmonary valvotomy procedure, the patient will be monitored in our coronary care unit for at least 24 hours to prevent the occurrence of side effects or infections.
