Early detection of cancer through screening has been determined to reduce mortality from cancers of the colon and rectum, breast, uterine cervix, and lung. Screening refers to testing individuals who are asymptomatic for a particular disease In addition to detecting cancer early, screening for colorectal and cervical cancers can prevent these cancers by identifying precancerous lesions that can be removed.

In the American Cancer Society’s publication, Cancer Facts & Figures 2014, a recent review found a 38% decline in breast cancer mortality among women who were screened with mammography. To know more about cervical cancer treatment in India, visit Manipal Hospitals Global.

Cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates have decreased by more than 50% over the past three decades, with most of the reduction attributed to screening with the Papanicolaou (Pap) test, which can detect both cervical cancer and precancerous lesions.

Mortality trends for prostate cancer have also been declining, which is thought to be in part due to early detection using the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test.

By looking at the incidence and prevalence statistics for different types of cancer in various groups of people, researchers can estimate which groups of people may have an increased risk of developing certain types of cancer. Statistics tell us that older women are at higher risk for breast cancer than younger women, men from other ethnicities are at higher risk for prostate cancer than Caucasian men, and people who drink alcohol often are at higher risk for liver cancer than people who don’t drink alcohol. Other risk factors, such as family history, the presence of other illnesses, and various lifestyle factors, are also taken into account when making screening recommendations specific to an individual.
