What is hip replacement surgery?

The surgery carried out to replace a worn-out or damaged hip joint is called Hip replacement surgery. During the surgery, a surgeon removes the damaged portions of the hip joint and replaces them with artificial joint (prosthesis) leading to pain relief and functional recovery of the hips.

How do you know if you need Hip Replacement Surgery?

A hip replacement surgery is required if:

  • If you are suffering from osteoarthritis, osteonecrosis, or arthritis, and your symptoms remain uncontrolled despite lifestyle changes and medications

  • You suffered a severe hip fracture

Hip replacement surgery can also be considered as a treatment option if you have any of the following:

  • Unbearable hip pain even after taking medication.

  • Your hip pain gives you sleepless nights

  • If you find it difficult to do daily activities like bending, sitting, and standing up

What are the different types of hip replacement surgery?

The different types of hip replacement surgery are:

  • Total hip replacement (most common)

  • Partial hip replacement (Also called hemiarthroplasty.)

  • Hip resurfacing (Commonly carried out in young patients)

Total hip replacement surgery also known as total hip arthroplasty is the most common type of surgery. In this surgery, implants are used to replace worn-out or damaged sections of the hip.

Partial hip replacement which is also called hemiarthroplasty is mainly carried out in older patients who have fractured hips due to injury.

Hip implants that are used in surgery help in mimicking the natural function of hips. They are made up of polyethylene (plastic), metal, ceramic or a combination of the materials. Some of the types of hip implants are:

  • Metal-on-Polyethylene (MoP)

  • Metal-on-Metal (MoM)

The patient will be transferred to a treatment room following surgery for a couple of hours as the anesthesia wears off. The blood pressure, heartbeat, alertness, level of pain or relaxation, and the need for treatment will be checked by medical personnel. The patient has to stay in the hospital for a day or two after completion of the surgery.
