Breast Reconstruction
In women who have undergone breast surgery which involved mastectomy or the removal of the breast, breast reconstruction is the best option. Breast reconstruction is to reform or reshape one or both breasts after a mastectomy, or even lumpectomy where the affected portion of the breast is cut away.
Why choose Manipal Hospitals
We understand perfectly what a woman goes through when she loses a breast to cancer. This is where our multidisciplinary Tumour Board works on the perfect protocol to present the option of breast reconstruction. We have eminent oncosurgeons with superlative, trained skills in the craft of breast reconstruction and advanced medical technology to assist them in this high precision surgery.
Solutions of breast reconstruction
There are two options in breast reconstructive surgery - Implants or prosthetics, or autologous or skin flap surgery. Implant surgery uses silicone or saline implants while the autologous or skin flap surgery uses tissue from another part of the body to form the breast. In some cases, the surgeon combines both options for better results.
Complexities of breast reconstruction
Some of the associated risks post breast reconstruction could include problems with the implant, such as movement, rupture, leakage, or scar tissue; tissue death or necrosis, which may develop in the skin, fat, or tissue flap; a loss of muscle strength at the donor site (for skin flap surgery); changes in breast or nipple sensation; need to have the implants removed and in rare cases, uneven breasts. This may also call for a revision surgery to have these corrected.
Number of cases
Though a rare surgery, we have successfully performed over 2 lakh breast reconstruction surgeries.
Infection control protocol
All women who undergo the surgery need both psychological and physical comfort to rest and recover in quietude. Our infection control norms rise to the occasion to offer just that.
