The two lower chambers of the heart are called ventricles and the right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs. This ventricle connects to the pulmonary artery, which is the main blood vessel going to the lungs. The pulmonary valve, which is one of the four valves of the heart, lies between the pulmonary artery and the right ventricle. In a healthy heart, the pulmonary valve fully opens when the right ventricle squeezes and enables the blood to flow to the pulmonary artery from the right ventricle. However, some people may have a fused or an abnormally thickened valve from birth. This valve may have an abnormal number of small parts called leaflets, owing to which, it cannot open up completely as it would have in normal situations. Moreover, with the growing pressure in the right ventricle, the heart has to work harder to pump the blood to the lungs, which, if left untreated, can damage the heart muscles and cause fatigue and breathlessness.
