The TMT, commonly known as the treadmill test, is a widely used cardiac investigation that evaluates how the heart responds to physical activity. Exercise places extra demand on the heart, and this test helps doctors identify problems with blood flow, heart rhythm, or exercise tolerance that may not be visible at rest. At Manipal Hospitals International, TMT testing is conducted under close medical supervision, with a strong focus on safety, accuracy, and patient reassurance.
A treadmill test monitors one's heart rate, blood pressure, and electrocardiogram (ECG) continuously as the individual walks on a treadmill. As the person walks on the treadmill, the difficulty of the walk (through both an increase in speed and incline) is progressively raised as a measurement of how well the person's heart works under physical strain.
In the simplest terms, the TMT test for the heart allows physicians to determine how well the heart receives blood and oxygen when the body is subjected to physical activity (exercise).
Doctors recommend a TMT when they need to assess heart health during physical effort. Some heart conditions only appear when the heart is under strain, making this test an important part of cardiac evaluation.
The TMT can be performed using different exercise protocols depending on age, fitness level, and medical condition.
Manipal Hospitals offers comprehensive cardiac diagnostics supported by experienced cardiologists and trained technicians. Every treadmill test is conducted with clear instructions, continuous monitoring, and immediate medical support if required.
A TMT may be advised when:
Certain conditions may require postponement or an alternative test.
The test is performed in a controlled environment. ECG electrodes are placed on the chest, and a blood pressure cuff is applied. The treadmill starts slowly and becomes more challenging in stages.
Recovery is quick. Patients usually rest for a short period while heart rate and blood pressure return to baseline. Mild tiredness or breathlessness may occur but settles rapidly.
Most people can resume normal activities the same day unless advised otherwise by the doctor.
A TMT is generally safe when performed under medical supervision. Rare risks include abnormal heart rhythms, chest pain, or dizziness. Continuous monitoring ensures prompt response if any issue arises.
The cost of a TMT depends on the protocol used and whether additional imaging is required. At Manipal Hospitals, the test is offered at rates that are significantly more affordable than those in many Western and Gulf countries, making high-quality cardiac assessment accessible to international patients.
Personalised estimates include consultation, monitoring, and reporting.
International patients receive assistance with appointment scheduling, travel coordination, visa support, interpreter services, accommodation guidance, and follow-up planning to ensure a smooth diagnostic experience.
